Move Hotmail contacts to iCloud / iPhone / iPad / iMac

This is how to move/import/export your Hotmail contacts to iCloud, iPhone, iPad or iMac:

  1. Export contacts to csv (contacts > manage > export)
  2. Import csv into Gmail (contacts > more > import)
  3. Open Contacts (adress book) on mac and go to Preferences > Accounts > Click Plus sign to add your email account that has your contacts (I.E, Hotmail)
  4. Select Sync with Google > Configure
  5. Fil in your Gmail data and click ok
  6. Close the preferences, go back to you Adress Book and wait till ‘On my Mac’ shows up as group
  7. Click on ‘On my Mac’, select a random contact and select all contact (cmd + a)
  8. Copy the contacts (cmd + c), click on ‘All iCloud’ and paste the contacts (cmd + v)

Your Contacts are now on iCloud, ready to by synced with your iPhone, iPad or iMac!

The next step could be te import your phone number / contacts from your old phone and merge them with your Hotmail iCloud contacts. To reach that, follow the next steps:

  1. Save al your phone number / contacts on the (micro) sim of your old phone
  2. If it’s not a micro sim you should buy a converter or use software to read out the data
  3. If it’s a micro sim, place it in the iPhone
  4. If you’ve already connected to iCloud, be sure to disable this (via Settings > iCloud > Contacts) and, when asked, remove all contact from your iPhone
  5. Then go to Settings > E-mail / Contacts /Agenda’s >  Import sim contacts
  6. Go to Settings > iCloud > Contacts and enable Contact sharing again. When asked, combine your sim imported contacts with the iCloud contacts

And your done! The phone numbers and extra info is added to your iCloud contacts. Any questions? Let me know and i’ll try to answer the asap.

This is kind of an old article, so I hope you’re still around. My Hotmail contacts are not on my computer. They are somewhere on my iPhone. But, Microsoft now has chosen to force us to use the outlook for iOS app. Is there a way to, you think, to sign into Hotmail, and to import my contacts from Hotmail to iCloud. Thanks.

    What is csv?
I just migrated from Blackberry to iPhone.
I currently see a few contacts in the iCloud group in my iPhone, and most of my contacts in the Hotmail group. I can´t transfer the contacts in Hotmail to iCloud, and I can´t transfer the contacts in my iphone to the address book in my MacBook.
What should I do to move all of my contacts to iCloud so I can see them in other devices?

A CSV is a comma seperated values text file. You can open a CSV in Excel or any other spreadsheet program. When you want to transfer your contact from hotmail to iCloud you can do that via Gmail. Just follow step 1 to 8. Good Luck!

      Hi Larraine,

Can you be more specific: at which step do you think te problem is? For example: is the csv file incomplete (step 1)? Or does the import to Gmail fail (step 2)? Etc.

Awesome man, saved me from restoring my iphone to a previous backup. I did not want to go that route.

a few things I would like to correct you on if I may….

Address Book is called Contact “Brown tab book Icon on Mac”

Step 3 should be “Open contacts on mac and go to Preferences > Accounts > Click Plus sign to add your email account that has your contacts (I.E, Hotmail)

I have got to part of point 8, but I do not seem to be able to locate ‘all icloud’. Even my own icloud account will not let me paste these? Have I done something wrong?

    • Martijn · November 15, 2016 Reply

      Hi Angela,

In the left top corner of the “contacts” application you should see “iCloud > All Contacts”. If you don’t see it, maybe you have to add your iCloud account to contacts (via preferences > accounts > + button).

      Good luck!
